In the gilded world of 19th-century Paris, the Countess Louise sells her wedding earrings to settle a secret debt, claiming she simply lost them. This small, frivolous lie triggers a devastating chain of events as the jewels travel through the hands of her husband and her lover, the Baron Donati. What began as a trivial deception soon returns to haunt her, transforming a pair of trinkets into a catalyst for scandal, heartbreak, and a fatal clash of honor.

Max Ophüls (1902–1957) was a German-born filmmaker renowned for his graceful camera movements, emotional depth, and elegant storytelling. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he built an international career across Europe and Hollywood. His major films include LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN (1948), LA RONDE (1950), LE PLAISIR (1952), LOLA MONTÈS (1955). He received the Golden Lion at the Venice FF for the screenplay of LA RONDE, a rare honor for its time. Though underappreciated during his life, Ophüls is now regarded as a master whose influence can be seen in filmmakers across generations.
