Muniyandi, a farm laborer, marries and brings Shivakami to the farm, where she befriends Shankaran. Muniyandi later catches them together, and, devastated, dies by suicide. Overcome with guilt, Shankaran flees and tries alcohol and spirituality to escape his torment. His journey ends in the temple town of Chidambaram, where he finds Shivakami working as a shoe keeper at the temple.
ಕೃಷಿ ಕೂಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಮುನಿಯಾಂಡಿ ಎಂಬಾತ ಶಿವಕಾಮಿ ಎಂಬವಳನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಿ, ತಾನು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ತೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆತರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕೆ ಶಂಕರನ್ ಎಂಬವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಮುನಿಯಾಂಡಿ ನಂತರ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇರುವಾಗ ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿದು, ಮನಸ್ಸು ಒಡೆದುಹೋಗಿ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಪರಾಧ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ ಶಂಕರನ್ ಓಡಿಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕುಡಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಸಂಕಟ ಮರೆಯಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯ ಪಟ್ಟಣ ಚಿದಂಬರಂನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಒಬ್ಬಳು ಚಪ್ಪಲಿ ಕಾಯುವವಳಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಕಾಮಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

G. Aravindan (1935 – 1991, Kottayam, Travancore) studied Botany at University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and began as a cartoonist, musician, and theatre artist. His background as a pioneer of Malayalam parallel cinema involved unconventional storytelling, experimentation, and influences from theatre and music, prior to directing films from the 1970s. Key films in his filmography include UTTARAYANAM (1974), KANCHANASITA (1977), THAMPU (1978), CHIDAMBARAM (1985), and VASTHUHARA (1991). His themes emphasize contemplative, minimalist narratives exploring spirituality, human relationships, societal dynamics, and silence with poetic realism. He received the Padma Shri in 1990, National Film Awards for Best Director for THAMPU, KANCHANA SITA, ORIDATHU, and Best Feature Film for UTTARAYANAM, CHIDAMBARAM, VASTHUHARA.
