THE DISPOSSESSED

VASTHUHARA

G. ARAVINDAN

INDIA / MALAYALAM / 1991 / 101 mins

Vaasthuhara is based on the short story of the same name by C. V. Sreeraman. The film looks into the lives of partition refugees from East Bengal to West Bengal. At a larger level, it's the universal story of refugees.

Born in Kottayam, Kerala, he began as a cartoonist before moving into filmmaking. His cinema is known for its poetic minimalism, silence, long shots and philosophical depth. Rooted in modernist thought, Aravindan’s work blends folklore, spirituality and social critique, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian cinema. His most important films include UTTARAYANAM (1975), KANCHANA SEETA (1977), KUMMATY (1979), ESTHEPPAN (1980), POKKUVAYIL (1982), CHIDAMBARAM (1985) and ORIDATHORIDATHU (1987). He has received several major national and international honours for his contribution to Indian cinema.
