Legendary Indian filmmaker S. R. Puttanna Kanagal (1933–1985), was a visionary who revolutionized Kannada cinema. Born in Kanagal, Mysore, he rose from a publicity boy and driver to become one of India’s most influential directors. He is celebrated for his "bridge films" that balanced artistic depth with commercial appeal, often focusing on strong female protagonists and social taboos. His best works include GEJJE POOJE (1969), SHARAPANJARA (1971), and NAGARAHAVU (1972). He immensely contributed in the careers of icons like Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh, and the Karnataka Government’s highest directorial honor is named in his memory.
